Southern Strawberry Jello Salad with Cool Whip
This Strawberry Jello Salad is one of those classic, nostalgic recipes that never goes out of style. It’s light, fluffy, and perfectly sweet with juicy strawberries in every bite. Whether you’re serving it for a holiday, potluck, or just a simple family dinner, it’s always a crowd favorite.

If you grew up with Strawberry Jello Salad, you already know how good this is. It comes together with just a few simple ingredients (like strawberry jello and Cool Whip) and has that classic light, fluffy texture with sweet strawberries in every bite. I love making it ahead for holidays and gatherings since it’s easy, dependable, and always disappears fast. I don’t think I ever attended a church potluck growing up where this salad didn’t appear on the table!

I have a few ingredient tips for you below, but find the full recipe card at the bottom of the post (it’s printable too).
Ingredient Notes & Swaps
- Strawberry Jello gelatin: You can swap in raspberry, cherry or orange jello gelatin for a slightly different flavor, but strawberry is the classic choice. Be sure to get the 6-ounce package (it usually says Family Size on it).
- Hot water: Make sure it’s very hot so the gelatin fully dissolves for a smooth texture.
- Cold water: Adjust between 1/2 and 3/4 cup depending on how firm you want the final salad.
- Cool Whip (whipped topping): Be sure it’s fully thawed before folding in. You can substitute with stabilized homemade whipped cream if preferred.
- Frozen strawberries: Use sliced frozen strawberries for best results. Do not thaw them before adding, as they help the mixture set properly and keep the texture fluffy.
Want to change it up? You can add in a few other ingredients like mini marshmallows, pineapple chunks or even a splash or two of lemon juice. This recipe is super forgiving, you really can’t mess it up, just be sure you let it refrigerate until set.

Steps for Making My Southern Strawberry Jello Salad Recipe
Step 1: Dissolve the gelatin
In a casserole dish or pan, whisk together the strawberry Jello and hot water until it’s completely dissolved. This step is important so you don’t end up with any grainy texture later. Stir in the cold water.
Step 2: Let it partially set
Place the dish in the refrigerator for about 45 minutes to 1 hour. You’re looking for the gelatin to thicken slightly, not fully set. It should still be a bit loose but no longer watery.
Step 3: Whisk until light and airy
Once it’s thickened, give it a good whisk until it becomes a little foamy. This helps create that signature fluffy texture.
Step 4: Fold in the Cool Whip
Gently fold in the thawed Cool Whip until smooth and fully combined. Then fold in the frozen sliced strawberries. The frozen berries help everything set up perfectly!
Step 5: Chill until set
Refrigerate for 3–4 hours, or until fully set. Serve chilled.
Serving Suggestion
I always love to serve this jello salad on dessert plates and top each slice with a dollop of Cool Whip and then a strawberry. You could also add on a sprinkle of chopped nuts or other sliced fruit like bananas or pineapple!
Leftovers / Storage
- Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Texture is best within the first 24–48 hours as it can soften slightly over time.
- Do not freeze, as the texture will become watery once thawed.
I hope you’ll give this strawberry jello salad a try! It’s SUCH an easy recipe, so refreshing for any occasion and delicious! Plus, it’s great for a make-ahead dish because you can pop it in the fridge to have ready the next day, etc.
